President Trump is now alleging that he was simply being sarcastic yesterday, when he thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for issuing counter sanctions against new U.S. sanctions on Russia, by ordering American diplomatic missions operating in Russia to cut staff by 755 people.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued the response today via email to The New York Times. “He was being sarcastic,” she said. No one is going to buy this excuse, they should have simply left it alone. Trump’s comments were bad enough on their own, but to actually claim that he was joking around, by claiming he was being sarcastic, just makes the situation even worse. Especially considering we know Trump wasn’t being sarcastic, he really meant what he said.
Either Trump legitimately thanked Putin for issuing counter sanctions against the U.S., or he is a complete clown who would sarcastically joke about that in the first place. Both are horrible. Yesterday Trump thanked Putin for ordering the reduction of U.S. diplomatic staff because it allows the U.S. government to “cut down our payroll.”
“I want to thank him because we’re trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I’m concerned I’m very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll,” he told reporters at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. You can see his “sarcasm” in the clip below.
