President Trump attacked the media yesterday, like usual, during an interview with Mike Huckabee, in which he called the media “fake.” Trump then took it a step further however, by claiming that he himself came up with the word “fake,” despite it originally being used to describe the Russian disinformation campaign that was helping Trump.
Trump began using the term “fake” to describe the news as a means to attack anything said about him that he did not like. This exact same strategy was used by the Nazis and was one of the main ways these rose to power. There is an actual term for it, lugenpresse, meaning lying press, used against any media outlet that presented news that the Nazis didn’t like.
Trump claimed that he came up with the term “fake” and claimed that no one else uses it. “I think one of the greatest of all terms I’ve come up with is ‘fake.’ I guess other people have used it, perhaps, over the years, but I’ve never noticed it,” he said. You can see his comments in the clip below, starting around 9:00.
Trump would not have been correct with this lie, even if he meant to refer specifically to the phrase “fake news.” He really thinks that since he has been using this term, he must have invented it and it just couldn’t have been anyone else. This is indeed an example of extreme narcissism. To a narcissist, if they didn’t create or cause it, it simply didn’t happen. They literally are the center of their own universe.
To Trump’s credit though, as far as the term “fake” goes, he certainly has made us all realize the true scope of just how fake one person can be, with his; fake tan, fake hair, fake money, fake patriotism, fake Christianity, fake non-racism, fake intelligence, fake morals, fake honesty, and fake presidency.
