Trump stepped up his attacks on the free press this afternoon, during his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House. Trump referred to the right of free speech as literally “disgusting” while encouraging that there should be some kind of investigation to look into revoking NBC New’s broadcast license.
Trump was asked by a reporter, “Do you want to increase the nuclear arsenal?” to which Trump replied, “No I never discussed increasing it, I want it in perfect shape, that was just fake news by NBC. Uh, which gives a lot of fake news lately…And it’s frankly disgusting the way the, press is able to write whatever they want to write. And, people should look into it.” You can see Trump’s comments in the clip below.

Trump’s comments must be taken within the context of his threats towards the media today. Earlier this morning, Trump threatened to end and shut down NBC News because they are “bad” for the country. “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?” Trump posted this morning, “Bad for country!”
Saying that “people should look into it,” is Trump clearly calling for a challenge to NBC’s license, the same threat he issued this morning. Trump calling it “disgusting” that the “press is able to write whatever they want to write,” is self evidently an attack on the First Amendment. Trump is advocating a type of action, shutting down a news company, in a manner that can only being accurately compared to Nazi Germany.
The thing is, the meeting that President Trump had, where he discussed increasing our nuclear weapons supply, is obviously top secret. So Trump can deny saying that he wanted his increase because any documentation from that meeting will not be released. So it’s up to you to trust Trump, with his awful record of constantly lying, or the anonymous source that leaked his intentions to increase our arsenal.
Trump also thinks he’s some kind of brilliant military strategist, so in his mind, he doesn’t want to admit to our foes that he is rapidly increasing our nuclear arsenal. It would make sense to keep such a strategy secret, but the issue is why we are increasing them at all. You couldn’t put it past Trump, that he thinks he needs to increase our arsenal, because he wants to make sure we have some nukes left after he drops them on North Korea.
