President Trump kicked off his horribly ironic “Made in America Product Showcase” event at the White House today, where he went out of his way to insult Senator John McCain. McCain is recovering from very serious brain surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. While insulting McCain, President Trump couldn’t resist the urge to show that he doesn’t care at all about the health of a fellow colleague.
Trump opened his remarks on McCain on a positive note, saying, “I can tell you, we hope John McCain gets better very soon because we miss him,” Trump said. Perhaps because being nice literally feels wrong for Trump, he couldn’t help but throw an insult next, “He’s a crusty voice in Washington, plus we need his vote.”
I doubt anyone who like being called crusty, especially when they are recovering from brain surgery. What’s worse though, is that President Trump would even feel the need to imply that he hopes McCain will get better because he needs McCain’s vote. There was also no reason for Trump to be discussing McCain at this event.
By talking about needing McCain’s vote, Trump revealed he wasn’t serious when he said he hopes McCain will get better because he “misses” him. McCain has been a frequent critic of Trump both on the campaign trail and since his inauguration, so it’s obviously just a back handed wishing of sentiment. Trump doesn’t miss McCain at all.
McCain’s absence must be bothering Trump, because McCain’s inability to vote at the moment, has shown how pathetically far Republicans are from getting the 50 votes they need for their Obamacare “repeal and replace” plan. I put repeal and replace in quotes because in many ways, the GOP is just rebranding Obamacare and adding in their own legislative items. It’s not repeal and replace, its preserve and expand.
“While John is recovering, the Senate will continue our work on legislative items and nominations, and will defer consideration of the Better Care Act,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement over the weekend. That translates to, “we can’t even afford to lose one vote, and we don’t have enough votes, so let’s blame this vote delay on McCain.”
You can watch Trump give these vile comments about McCain in the video below, if you can stand to watch him speak.
