Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Goes For Trump’s Throat At NATO Summit With Bold Defiance

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a bold and defiant message today against Trump, as Trudeau spoke on the opening day of this year’s NATO Summit in Brussels. Trudeau’s message comes after Trump started his NATO summit by meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, where Trump attacked the United States’ NATO allies for not paying enough for defense, even going as far as saying they owe the U.S. money.

“Many countries are not paying what they should. And, frankly, many countries owe us a tremendous amount of money for many years back, where they’re delinquent, as far as I’m concerned, because the United States has had to pay for them,” Trump said, “So if you go back 10 or 20 years, you’ll just add it all up.  It’s massive amounts of money is owed.”

Prime Minister Trudeau has responded to this demand of money by Trump with bold defiance, by outright refusing to raise Canada’s spending and even calling Trump a greedy “bean counter.” You can see him say this in the footage below.

“A lot of people talk about the 2 percent,” said Trudeau, “but announcing inputs isn’t nearly as important as demonstrating outputs. You can try and be a bean counter, but the fundamental question is: is what you are doing actually making a difference?”

Trudeau isn’t only refusing to increase spending, he is also going to decrease it. New figures show that Canadian military spending will be cut significantly, down to 1.23 percent of its GDP this year from 1.36 percent last year. This is far below the 2 percent target that Trump is demanding at the summit.

To further defy Trump as he attacks NATO, Trudeau praised the alliance and called out Trump’s highly controversial trade war. Trudeau even went as far as boasting of a “landmark” trade deal he finished negotiating, as Trump has only been able to start a trade war and has negotiated no deals at all.

“I think the European Union matters significantly. Canada is pleased to have concluded a landmark progressive trade deal with the European Union, at a time where trade deals aren’t particularly popular around the world, we’re actually signing stronger trade deals. Europe is a valuable and important partner not just to Canada but to the world.”  Trudeau said, as seen in the footage below.

This outright defiance of Trump by Trudeau is remarkable. It’s also hilarious to imagine what Trump’s face will look like when he hears that Trudeau is bragging about negotiating trade deals when he hasn’t successfully done so himself.
