Qatari officials have obtained evidence of what they claim is illicit influence by the United Arab Emirates on Jared Kushner and other Trump administration associates, including details of secret meetings, but they have decided not to give this evidence to Special Counsel Robert Mueller because they don’t want to “harm relations” with the Trump administration, according to three sources familiar with the Qatari discussions. In short, this is blackmail.
The Qatari officials believe the secret meetings they have evidence of, influenced Trump’s public endorsement of a blockade of Qatar by its neighbors that began last year. The Qataris also met with FBI Director Chris Wray while they were in Washington earlier this year, clearly sending a signal to Trump that they are ready and willing to present their evidence to the FBI, if they do not get their way.
Qatari officials also considered speaking to Mueller during their visit to Washington. They’re essentially saying, “treat us well or we give the evidence to Mueller.” This shows how national security is being affected right now by the White House’s disregard of basic ethical requirements. This is why you don’t elect people who refuse to release their tax returns, people.
Normally this would basically just be standard diplomacy and diplomatic maneuvering, but the problem is that nations like Qatar can take advantage of the illegal activity that special counsel Mueller is investigating. The Qataris are almost certainly pressuring Jared to get the Saudis to back off from the blockade they enacted on Qatar last year, in return for not handing over evidence to Mueller. It’s almost like White House ethics rules exist for a reason.
To sum up here, two foreign powers are fighting for reasons mostly unrelated to the United States. Trump picked a side in a fight where not having one was in our best interests, and now we find out that one of the sides has information on Trump and Trump’s “adviser,” who also happens to be his son-in-law. It turns out that the other side has chosen not to share their knowledge of said information over to the Special Counsel.
Essentially our national security and national interest is rendered irrelevant in this crisis because of the President and one of his adviser’s questionable foreign entanglements. The Qataris are aware of this, and are orchestrating these leaks to the media to publicly pressure Kushner and Trump in an attempt to further influence American policy. This is exactly why public officials need to totally divest and/or have their business interests placed in a blind trust.
