Donald “Dee” Margo, 54th and current mayor of the border city of El Paso, Texas, has devastated Donald Trump’s plans to declare an emergency in order to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall. Dee Margo spoke with conservative CNN host S.E. Cupp on Saturday, where he debunked claims Trump made in his State of the Union and invited Trump to come visit his city so he could set the story straight.
This is devastating for many reasons, perhaps most of which is that Trump will be heading to El Paso tomorrow to hold a desperation rally to build demand for a border wall. Mayor Margo denouncing the entire point of Trump’s rally, especially when he is the Mayor of the city where the rally will take place, is absolutely devastating to Trump’s agenda.
Trump said that El Paso is safer due to “a powerful barrier” during his State of the Union address, “Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities. Simply put, walls work and walls save lives.”
But Mayor Margo said that Trump is “misinformed” and that what he stated during the State of the Union is “not factually correct.” The GOP Mayor said that he would “absolutely” call Trump out for his factually incorrect information and even went on to make a case against having a wall at all, “The geography of Texas won’t allow a fence from El Paso to Brownsville even if you wanted to do it.”
Mayor Margo said the fence they have is useful but it is just a part of many other more important things, like technology and staff. This is incredibly strong evidence against Trump’s desire to declare an emergency because it proves that there is no emergency. In fact, the Mayor talked more about granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants such as DACA youth, over building a wall. The full segment can be viewed below.
