GOP Senator Mitt Romney Explains Vote to Convict Donald Trump on Impeachment Charge

A four P.M. Eastern standard time today, the Senate will make a historic vote on whether Donald Trump will be convicted and removed from office as a result of his impeachment. Acquittal is expected, but it ain’t over til it’s over, and GOP Senator Mitt Romney has just revealed that he will vote to convict the president.

Mitt Romney has taken his spot in history after announcing that he will vote to convict Trump on the first article of impeachment, which accused the orange of abuse of power. He is declining a vote to convict on the second, for obstruction of Congress.

?There?s no question that the president asked a foreign power to investigate his political foe,? Romney said in an announcement at the Senate. ?That he did so for a political purpose, and that he pressured Ukraine to get them to do help or to lead in this effort. My own view is there there?s not much I can think of that would be a more egregious assault on our Constitution than trying to corrupt an election to maintain power. And that?s what the president did.?

Romney even made an appearance on Fox news to announce his vote, as seen in the footage below, where he admitted Trump tried to “corrupt” the 2020 election.

He claims it is, ?the hardest decision? he has ever had to make and that seems believable considering he has to stand up to the Trump cult, ?…he did something which was grievously wrong. And to say, well, you know, because I?m on his team and I agree with him most of the time, that I should then assent to a political motive, would be a real stain on our constitutional democracy.?

Will this be enough to convince other GOP Senators to vote to convict? Probably not enough to get Trump out of office, but this still matters because now we officially have a GOP Senator on the record convicting Trump. He now cannot claim that he had the full support of his party and hopefully this will be a wake up call to more on the fence GOP voters. You can see Romney’s comments in the footage below, if you would like.
