Illinois’ Governor Destroys Trump’s Attempt to Shift Blame to States over Coronavirus Supplies

Illinois’ Governor J.B. Pritzker gave an interview Sunday with CNN for their “State of the Union” program, where he explained exactly why Donald Trump’s actions are responsible for causing more deaths from Coronavirus than there needed to be.

During the interview, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Governor Pritzker to respond to Trump’s recent attempts to blame the states for not having an adequate supply of medical devices like ventilators. Governor Pritzker responded to Trump saying Friday that the federal government is not an “ordering clerk” and that the states are responsible to “have for themselves.”

Governor Pritzker responded and said, “Well, the President does not understand the word federal.” Pritzker then explained that it is the federal government’s responsibility to stockpile emergency supplies for an emergency like a pandemic because the states do not have the scale required to do so, only the federal government does, which is exactly why we have the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the first place.

Not only did Governor Pritzker show that Trump’s blame shifting is not compatible with the basics about government, but also that because Trump doesn’t understand that it was his responsibility to have supplies, more people died than needed to.

“We now know that intelligence sources and all the best advice that was given was given in January and early February to the president and the White House, and they seem not to have acted at all upon it. If they had started in February building ventilators, getting ready for this pandemic, we would not have the problems we have today, and frankly, very many fewer people would die,” the Governor said, as seen in the footage below.

It’s good that Governor Pritzker is telling the truth and not afraid of the inevitable attacks that will come from Trump because we know Trump would have attacked him anyway. He added, “Look, we are one nation here. This virus knows no borders. It was up to the federal government, to begin with, to advise and to ask all the governors to put in stay at home orders. Those governors, Republican governors, would have done it earlier if the president had suggested it much earlier.”

“They knew at the federal level that that was the right thing to do. You can hear it in the words from Dr. Fauci, who I have had many direct conversations with and Dr. Birx. They knew it. The president was apparently reluctant, and we see what the results are today,” Governor Pritzker concluded.
