All eyes have been on India so far this week, so a lot of people are going to see how CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta rattled Donald Trump during his press conference early this morning in India’s capital city of New Delhi. First we will see how Acosta called Trump a liar right to his face and then we will examine the beautiful trap Acosta set for Trump with his question.
The exchange began with Acosta asking Trump, ?Can you pledge to the American people that you will not accept any foreign assistance in the upcoming election?? along with a question about staffing changes in the Trump administration.
?Okay first of all, I want no help from any country,? Trump answered, ?and I haven?t been given help from any country and if you see what CNN, your wonderful network, said, uh, I guess they apologized in a way for, didn?t they apologize for the fact that they said certain things that weren?t true? Tell me, what was their apology yesterday? What did they say??
?Mr. President,? Acosta countered, ?I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better yours sometimes if you don?t mind me saying.” Not only is this outright calling Trump a liar in front of all of India, Trump definitely minded Acosta saying this.
Trump fired back and started speaking at a much more rapid pace, clearly not happy with Acosta calling him a liar, ?Let me tell you about your record, your record is so bad you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You have the worst record in the history of broadcasting.?
?I?m not ashamed of anything and our organization is not ashamed,? Acosta countered. If Trump did not want to be called a liar, he shouldn’t have started it by claiming, without evidence, that CNN “apologized” the day before for not being truthful. You can see the exchange in the footage below and then we will see how this was a trap for Trump.

The trap Jim Acosta set for Trump with his question was fairly simple and easy to do because Trump is a persistent liar. It’s not that difficult to craft a question to trap Trump into going on the record admitting to something he denies. The hard part is getting him not to deflect, which is where Acosta’s skill comes in.
As Acosta later discussed on CNN’s New Day, his question of whether Trump would pledge to the American people that he would not accept foreign interference in the 2020 election, was a trap. It’s a trap because we already know that Trump sought foreign interference from Ukraine and China last year.
After all, Trump asking Ukraine for an investigation into the Biden’s is what got him impeached! Acosta knew Trump would not admit the truth and would deny anything to do with foreign interference. Lying is one of the main issues voters have with Trump, so getting him on the record once again with a major lie, indeed helps the cause. You can see Acosta discuss his exchange with Trump in the footage below.
