Senator Bernie Sanders’ chances of winning the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination had fallen nearly to zero weeks ago, after his loses on Super Tuesday, which is why for weeks now, top voices in the party have been calling on him to drop out of the race. Today Sanders announced that he was doing just that.
Today Senator Sanders announced that he is ending his 2020 campaign and called on his supporters to rally behind former Vice President Joe Biden. So even hardcore Sanders supporters are going to have to acknowledge that their own candidate wants them to support Biden.
Sanders’ supporters should remind themselves that Biden was the guy that Donald Trump was so nervous about running against that he got himself impeached in an attempt to stop him. In any event, with Sanders suspending his campaign due to Biden’s massive lead in the delegate count, Biden is now essentially THE 2020 Democratic nominee for president.
“I wish I could give you better news, but I think you know the truth. And that is that we are now some 300 delegates behind Vice President Biden and the path to victory is virtually impossible,” Sanders said today. “I have concluded that this battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful, and so today I am announcing the suspension of my campaign.”
"We have never been just a campaign. We are a grassroots, multi-racial, multi-generational movement…Today I congratulate Joe Biden, a very decent man, who I will work with to move our progressive ideas forward."

Biden responded to Sanders’ campaign suspension and praised him, calling him a “good man,” and a “great leader,” which also acknowledging that the decision to end the campaign was definitely, “hard a decision.” In his response, Biden also made it clear that while although Sanders and him disagreed on certain methods, they agree on their goals for society.
“We will confront income inequality in our nation. We will make sure healthcare is affordable and accessible to every American. We will make education at our public colleges and universities free. We will ease the burden of student debt. And, most important of all, we will defeat Donald Trump,” Biden said.
In the midst of this Coronavirus crisis, this is a good thing because now the party can unite behind Biden. It’s time to take back the White House and see to it that Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump in November.
I know Bernie well. He’s a good man, a great leader, and one of the most powerful voices for change in our country. And it’s hard to sum up his contributions to our politics in one, single tweet. So I won’t try to. https://t.co/Z6OkCDWFNm
