We now know more about the crimes that Trump’s former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn committed, that are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and they are disturbing. Flynn met with Turkish government representatives, while working with the Trump transition team to become National Security Adviser, to discuss a deal to literally kidnap a Muslim cleric living here in the United States.
Flynn and his son met with representatives of the Turkish government in December of last year in New York City near Trump Tower, where Flynn was serving on the presidential transition team. They offered Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr., $15 million to kidnap Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric living in the U.S., and deliver him to the Turkish government. Turkish President Erdogan considers the cleric a political enemy and has demanded that the U.S. hand him over before.
Mueller’s investigation has not uncovered evidence that Flynn and his son were ever paid to perform this kidnapping and it is still unclear to how far the investigation is going to go because the evidence so far has been acquired from people who were not at the meeting and “didn’t have direct knowledge from Mr. Flynn or his associates about its purported details.” Flynn’s lawyer has declined to comment and deny it though.
To clarify how terrible this situation is, while Michael Flynn was working on the Trump transition to become the National Security Adviser, he and his son were in talks to kidnap a legal U.S. resident and forcibly take him to Turkey on behalf of the Turkish government, in exchange for 15 million dollars. And he was willing to use his power and influence as National Security Adviser to make it happen.
Flynn wasn’t in diplomatic negotiations to have this cleric deported through normal channels, he was agreeing to kidnap him and force him on to a private plane to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars. This is one of the most concerning pieces of criminal activity we have learned so far about the Trump administration.
