Nancy Pelosi Calls Trump’s Emergency Declaration ‘fake’ & Shows Him The Receipts

Democratic House Majority Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement this afternoon following Donald Trump’s Rose Garden address, during which Trump officially declared a national emergency on the U.S. southern border. The pair of top Democrats are defining Trump’s move as an “unlawful” move and a “power grab.”

Speaker Pelosi then responded to Trump’s declaration on social media and called it the “#FakeTrumpEmergency.” She didn’t just call it fake either, she cited Trump himself as evidence that there is no real crisis. “The President himself says he didn’t need to declare a national emergency,” Pelosi said, while also sharing footage of Trump botching his declaration.

Speaker Pelosi and Schumer will now likely support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s resolution she announced this morning with Representative Joaquin Castro, which will be a bill to stop Trump’s emergency declaration. Trump’s admission that he didn’t need to declare an emergency should be all the evidence they need to stop him.

Pelosi and Schumer are also calling upon Republicans to “join us to defend the Constitution.” Framing Trump’s move as an attack on the constitution is powerful, especially because Republicans constantly attacked former President Obama over allegedly ignoring the Constitution (even though he was a constitutional law professor).

[email protected]’s unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe, stealing from urgently needed defense funds for the security of our military and our nation,” Speaker Pelosi said this afternoon.

“The President’s unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe, stealing from urgently needed defense funds for the security of our military and our nation,” Pelosi and Schumer continued in their statement. “This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process.”
