As the 2020 Democratic presidential primary really starts to heat up, it was to be expected that the candidates would start going after each other with more intensity, but New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just took it to another level.
A new interview Ocasio-Cortez gave to New York Magazine was published early this morning and in it, she completely disavowed current Democratic 2020 front-runner and candidate Joe Biden. It all started after Ocasio-Cortez was asked by New York Magazine about what role she would play in Congress if Biden wins the election and becomes our 46th president.
“Oh God,” she answered. “In any other country, Joe Biden and I would not be in the same party, but in America, we are.” It was to be expected that Ocasio-Cortez would speak out against Biden at some point, because she has fully endorsed candidate Bernie Sanders and campaigns with him. But her words could easily split the party because they are very divisive.
Ocasio-Cortez expanded on her statement that she doesn’t even consider herself as being in the same party as Joe Biden by complaining about the current state of the Democratic Party. She said that the Democratic Party, “can be too big of a tent,” and that, “they let anybody who the cat dragged in call themselves a progressive. There’s no standard.”
Ocasio-Cortez essentially believes that the party is not progressive enough and that anyone more moderate like Joe Biden needs to be kicked out and not appeased. She patted herself on the back for being responsible for making the party more progressive by creating more room for “dissent.”
“For so long, when I first got in, people were like, ‘Oh, are you going to basically be a tea party of the left?’ And what people don’t realize is that there is a tea party of the left, but it’s on the right edges, the most conservative parts of the Democratic Party,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“So the Democratic Party has a role to play in this problem, and it’s like we’re not allowed to talk about it. We’re not allowed to talk about anything wrong the Democratic Party does,” she continued. “I think I have created more room for dissent, and we’re learning to stretch our wings a little bit on the left.”
This could split the party because whether you like it or not, her comments are resonating with millennials and younger generations, who overall are more progressive and liberal than previous generations. Every available poll shows younger people have more favorable views of things like socialism. Younger generations are simply unhappy with the U.S. government and Ocasio-Cortez speaks to them, which is why she is so popular.
Ocasio-Cortez needs to calm down with this rhetoric because Joe Biden would be the most progressive nominee in the history of Democratic party if he gets it. He has a more progressive platform than any candidate previously nominated by the Democratic party because that is the natural progression of the party. She probably agrees with Biden on more than 95% of issues so letting the small differences potentially split the party at a crucial time is not a good thing.
