Rex Tillerson Doesn’t Know Why Trump Just Fired Him, But This Is Why

Now former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did not speak to Donald Trump before his firing and is “unaware” of the reason behind his dismissal, according to a statement from Tillerson’s top deputy. The statement from Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein strongly suggests Tillerson found out about his firing from Twitter.

“The Secretary did not speak to the President this morning and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling and not to be regretted,” Goldstein said in a statement. Goldstein also said that Tillerson had “every intention of staying” before his firing.

So what happened? Unfortunately, the reasons are fairly obvious. Tillerson’s firing comes one day after he publicly broke from the White House and blamed Russia for ordering a chemical attack against a former Russian spy in the UK.

Tillerson told reporters the attack “clearly” came from Russia and said, “It’s almost beyond comprehension that a state, an organized state, would do something like that,” while he spoke to reporters aboard a US airplane on a trip to Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin deflected questions about the incident during an interview with BBC on Tuesday.

Also, there is a small chance the North Korea situation will turn out well, so Trump might want to claim all the credit for himself. The Secretary of State is principally concerned with foreign policy, so any win on North Korea would be credited in some part to Tillerson.
