Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a forum promoting investment in his country that the global dominating power of the United States of America is coming to an end and that Russia will be ignoring challenges to its foreign policy by all western nations. Lavrov’s words come after top Russian officials threatened president Trump with an attack on U.S. troops in Syria, as we will discuss.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that western nations are having “a very nervous reaction” to Russia’s rise from post-Soviet chaos into a leading world power in the past two decades. Russia’s top diplomat said recent tensions between the U.S., Russia, and other western nations, are the result of the “categorical reluctance of the United States and its western allies to agree that the 500-year-long period of western domination in world affairs is coming to an end,” saying such a transition would be difficult for those who “are in the habit of ruling the world for centuries.”
The most recent area of tension between Russia and the West is of course the poisoning of a former Russian spy who fled to the U.K. after he was arrested for being a double agent and released in a 2010 prisoner swap. Russia has denied the charges, but the U.K. has already moved to expel 23 Russian diplomats. “The response will come very quickly, I can assure you,” Lavrov reportedly said when asked about Russia’s reaction to the measures.
Earlier this week, top Russian officials threatened to retaliate with force if president Trump orders an attack that could endanger the lives of Russian soldiers stationed in Syria that are supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “In the event of a threat to our military servicemen’s lives, Russia’s armed forces will take retaliatory measures to target both the missiles and their delivery vehicles,” Gerasimov said, according to the state-run Tass Russian News Agency.
Think about the implications of Russia’s words here. They are openly threatening to attack our military and are saying that the United States’ power over the world is literally coming to an end. What has changed in recent history to make Russia feel so confident in challenging the U.S. in this manner? Obviously, the election of Donald Trump.
Normally I would be happy that Trump is being put in his place, but I have enjoyed living in the most powerful country in the world. We may bully other nations, but we citizens get to enjoy feeling safe from invasion and war. But if Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is correct, perhaps another world war is unavoidable at this point. It’s just a matter of when.
