Republican Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee found himself in a battle of words and controversy with President Trump over this Columbus Day weekend. Trump has attacked Corker viciously, which has resulted in Corker defending himself with some eye opening remarks, including a new revelation about how the GOP members of the Senate really feel about President Trump.
Corker has given an interview with the New York Times, in which he has warned about how dangerous President Trump is. He has also revealed that he is not alone in how he feels about Trump, as most Senate Republicans feel the same way about Trump being a danger to the safety and stability of our nation.
The scary part about what Corker is warning of is the reason himself and the GOP feel this way about Trump. “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” Corker said in the interview. He also confirmed that the GOP has been damaged by this need to contain Trump, with all members fully aware of that fact. “I know he has hurt, in several instances, he’s hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by tweeting things out,” Corker said.
Corker clearly expressed the danger that is President Trump, and then all but explicitly hinted at the idea of Republicans recognizing that they need to impeach Trump before he causes more damage. “Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” he said, adding that “of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.”
Corker is not up for re-election and has been attacked viciously by President Trump, which would explain why he is willing to make such staggering remarks here. He is literally saying that the President is unfit and dangerous, while also saying that nearly every member of the GOP in the Senate is fully aware of it. Perhaps since he is not running for office again, he is willing to break the ice and be the first to say what is on everyone’s mind in the Senate, that they are too afraid to say themselves.
In all seriousness, Corker has just changed the game here and may have sparked the conversation that will ultimately begin the impeachment process. Since the media will now heavily cover his comments about Trump’s unfitness for office, GOP members in the Senate can now openly talk about it as a topic of discussion, whereas in the past they have been avoiding discussing what they really think out of fear.
Corker is also probably a trial balloon for the GOP. They want to see how the public reacts to Corker vs Trump. If the public embraces Corker, you’ll start to see Republicans move away from Trump. It’s not about having a spine because none of them do. They need to know that it’s in their interest to protect us from Trump. Corker is just taking one for the team.
