Trump posted made a highly misleading implication this morning in attempt to claim that he has done something good for the black community since becoming president. He posted a statistic about the unemployment rate for blacks, which on its face is a good thing, but Trump can’t claim credit for it, as we will briefly explore.
“The African American unemployment rate fell to 6.8%, the lowest rate in 45 years. I am so happy about this News! And, in the Washington Post (of all places), headline states, “Trumps first year jobs numbers were very, very good.” Trump posted.

The most misleading part of this statistic is visualized in the graphic below. Trump is trying to push the statistic in his social media post as evidence that he has done something for the black community, but the data below shows that the African American unemployment rate has fallen alongside the white unemployment rate at the same time.
In other words, the unemployment rate has been dropping for basically everyone, not just blacks. Trump would have you believe he did something specifically to help out the black community, but he hasn’t.
What is really happening here is that our economy is recovering after former President Obama came into office in the middle of one of the worst financial crises this country has ever seen, as evidenced by the explosion in the unemployment rate around 2008 in the graph above. The unemployment rate has been dropping on a steady trend since Obama basically saved us, it has nothing to do with Trump and no one is buying his post from today.
