Trump clearly wants to fire Mueller, everyone knows it and he hasn’t made much of an effort to hide it. But it looks like firing Mueller is now essentially impossible, because Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein reportedly personally approved the FBI raid of Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen.
The new report reveals that Rosenstein himself signed off on the raid, in which the FBI seized emails, tax documents and records related to Cohen’s payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels. Cohen’s lawyer, Stephen Ryan, said in a statement Monday that federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained their search warrant after receiving a referral “in part” from special counsel Robert Mueller. Ryan called the search “completely inappropriate and unnecessary.”
The only way for Trump to fire Mueller is to fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and replace him with an attorney general willing to do the job. But since Rosenstein signed off on the warrant himself, firing Rosenstein would be the most clear example of obstruction of justice imaginable. The FBI ‘dotted their i’s and crossed their t’s’ on this one, as they say. Another way of putting it, is simply that this warrant to seize Cohen’s records is unimpeachable.
Despite all this, and the fact that Trump hand picked Rosenstein himself, the report also says that Trump spent all last night considering firing Rosenstein. It is hard to predict how this will play out, but Trump is absolutely a wounded animal that has been backed into a corner. He will lash out and do something to protect himself before this is all over, it’s only a question of what.
