Your mind might naturally be searching for evidence that the title of this piece is fake news, but unfortunately it is the exact message that President Trump made in a statement on social media, this Thursday morning. It indeed feels like we are living in a Twilight Zone, as the president has threatened to abandon devastated Puerto Rico because he feels that the humanitarian crisis on the island is their fault.
“Puerto Rico survived the Hurricanes, now a financial crisis looms largely of their own making.” says Sharyl Attkisson. A total lack of accountability say the Governor. Electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes. Congress to decide how much to spend, We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” Trump posted.
Trump’s argument here is so pathetically insane, that even if you take into account Puerto Rico’s debt, you still cannot justify not doing everything possible to help get the island back on its feet. Let’s put it very simply, there are people who will be born on the island, up to even a decade from now, who will live on the island their entire lives, and will never see a Hurricane like Maria before they eventually pass in old age. This was very likely a once in a century storm, barring climate change possibly making storms like Maria more frequent. There is really no amount of planning that anyone could have done to prepare for this storm.
Trump’s threats come as new Federal Aid workers have just arrived on the island, when only about 10 percent of the island’s 3.4 million residents have electricity, and with the city that Donald and Melania visited still completely without power. Threatening to pull aid right now over debt, is nothing short of madness.
It has all come full circle, as this is the president who refused to fully waive the Jones Act, threw paper towels at victims down in Puerto Rico, while also telling them that they don’t need flashlights anymore.
