Donald Trump has brought us into what we can call World War 3M after he decided to invoke the Defense Production Act late yesterday and seized N95 respirators from 3M by law. Trumpers cheered on their dear leader as he did this, but this reckless decision has serious consequences and is not productive.
Some of the supplies Trump seized from 3M were being prepared to be shipped to Canada. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau responded to the seizing of these critical supplies they need and issued a warning to Trump.
PM Trudeau all but threatened Trump to think about reversing his decision because he will retaliate, “These are things that Americans rely on and it would be a mistake to create blockages or reduce the amount of back and forth trade of essential goods and services, including medical goods, across our border.”
3M and its CEO responded earlier this morning to Trump’s move by warning that retaliation, just like PM Trudeau is threatening, is exactly would happen as a result of this. But Trump is too busy bragging about how “hard” he has hit 3M.
“We hit 3M hard today after seeing what they were doing with their Masks. “P Act” all the way. Big surprise to many in government as to what they were doing – will have a big price to pay!” Trump said last night.

Earlier this morning, 3M said in response to Trump’s seizing of products that, “ceasing all export of respirators produced in the United States would likely cause other countries to retaliate and do the same, as some have already done. If that were to occur, the net number of respirators being made available to the United States would actually decrease. That is the opposite of what we and the Administration, on behalf of the American people, both seek.”
3M’s CEO Mike Roman said on CNBC that, “The narrative that we are not doing everything we can to maximize delivery of respirators in our home country — nothing could be further from the truth.” How many other countries are going to follow Canada’s example? This must have been a reckless and not thought out decision by Trump, because it is clear that the negatives outweigh the positives here.
